Update - We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. I have a small cloth wallet that contains two pockets. One pocket holds gift cards. One pocket holds membership cards. I oftentimes forget what is actually in the wallet tucked away in my purse – out of sight, out of mind.

Uwajimaya is offering great sales this month (in celebration of their 98th anniversary). This week my favorite white rice is on sale – $20 for a 15-pound bag – regularly $28.50. We were starting to get low on rice (around 22# on-hand), so I was eager to get a couple of bags.

Earlier this year, Uwajimaya had a great sale where they offered gift cards for 10% off. People were buying loaded cards with amounts exceeding $1,000. I think the maximum allowed per day was $2,000. People were coming back on multiple days to buy more gift cards. It was a fantastic bargain.

I don’t actually buy a lot at Uwajimaya, and I’m kind of mediocre at managing gift cards. I figured I might spend $200/year – so I bought a $200 gift card (for $180). I probably should have doubled the amount on the card – but, whatever.

This morning I went to Uwajimaya, got two bags of rice, and fished out my gift card from my card wallet. There were all sorts of paper receipts in the wallet for different cards so that I would know what the balance was on each card. It was kind of a mess.

When I got home, I decided I needed to untangle my cards. They weren’t even sorted into the correct pockets. I make stickers for the backs of the gift cards that list the balance of each gift card. (Then I can scrap the receipts.) The wallet is cleanly organized now.

Normally there are more gift cards. There is usually a Powell’s Books gift card. And frequently I have multiple gift cards for certain places (Kinokuniya, Oyatsupan, and Uwajimaya). This summer I did a good job using up gift cards.

I was pleased that I got $57 worth of rice for $36 today. And there’s still $144 remaining on my Uwajimaya gift card.

So, first, the next door neighbor starts trying to talk to me through the window right in the middle of the breakfast rush, aka "the absolute busiest and most hectic time of the day, same as it is in your house". After spending ten seconds listening with no real comprehension of what he was trying to say, I finally replied "Sir, I'm working. If this is important, you'll have to come back and talk to the manager or supervisor during the day". It was six in the morning! FFS.

Then, later, as we're getting them all on the bus, some absolute asshole decides not to wait and instead just ease her way past us. Which is very illegal, and also of course rude and dangerous. She could've hit one of them! She doesn't hit one of them, but she does sideswipe a parked car and knock one of the rearview mirrors clean off. She gets out of her own car, puts the mirror back on, and after confirming that none of us owns the car - drives off! My coworker was infuriated, but I guess he didn't see that coming. I saw that coming and left a note with the woman's license plate number and appearance on it. Though I forgot to put my own phone number, and next time I go in, if I see the car, I'll leave a slightly apologetic follow-up note, in case they need some sort of witness or corroboration. Because fuck that shit.

The Snowflake Challenge will be back in 2027! We hope you are able to join us for a month of community and prompting to ring in the New Year and get us through an otherwise dark and chilly season (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least).

We have a group of wonderful mods who are returning this year, but we love having new mods join in and there is a LOT to do. Becoming a mod can be as low or high commitment as you like. Here's some info about the various roles we have as mods:

Poster: You would write and post one of the prompt posts. The mod community works together to decide on the topic, but you get to explain it in your post and frame it in a way that fits the challenge. Then, on an assigned day, you make the post. Typically, posters also act as commenters on their own posts (see the next role).

Commenter: As participants leave comments on the prompt post linking to their personal journals for the response, you leave a comment acknowledging their participation. You can also visit their challenge response and comment on what they wrote, if time allows.

Other site organizer: Ideally we would be able to extend this challenge into other fandom spaces. This role will require adapting each post to whatever site you are managing (tumblr, bluesky, mastodon, etc), which may include fixing links, removing or altering HTML, sharing a small quote and linking to the Dreamwidth post, tagging appropriately, and/or removing or altering images to your site's specifications. You should be prepared to crosspost all intro/wrap-up posts as well as prompts, and you should be prepared to make additional posts as needed on your site to promote the challenge and interact with participants. Usually one or two people manage this role for a single space (such as managing all the posting to bluesky).

Blooming Orchid

Autumn is definitely here in the Willamette Valley. Overnight lows are starting to dip occasionally below 40°F, and daily highs are in the 50s °F. We’ll also be getting more rain in the coming week. My daily outdoor walks may get to be a pain at times.

I’m adjusting to medication and diet changes related to worsening glaucoma and cholesterol levels, and that’s a little bit of a pain. Add shorter daylight hours and a lack of sufficient heat in my bedroom, and I’ll say that I’m a bit grumpy at times. Recently, I’ve spent extra time helping family members with their own medical issues and travel issues – and my personal productivity is somewhat down. I have more personal energy during the long summer days, but it seems that winter doldrums are arriving early this year. Some of that is probably diet related. Trying to deal with Medicare changes isn’t helping my mood. Also, I’m dealing with some back pain. Yay.

My orchid, that Jenni gave me 4 or 5 years ago, is a late bloomer this year (probably because of how I damaged it last year). I historically have been completely useless with live orchids, but I finally got good advice on how to make them grow and bloom, which surprises me. Last year I broke the new growth while trying to train the spike, so this year I just left it alone. Anyway, the orchid seems to be doing better than I am.

I’ve coached peers on how to recognize scam texts, calls, and emails. So far, I’ve been able to avoid traps myself. Recently, though, I got one that was pretty good. I’m guessing there was an AI assist. I actually would have responded because the request was so very specific to my talents (the combination of which is unusual in IT and resulted in exceptional UI/UX, user documentation, and corporate presentations).
