I spent four years not writing. Now suddenly I'm back into writing and I am very rusty. So, in order to get this challenge off the ground: I'm returning to writing fanfiction and original story shorts so I can get back into my emotive writing. I miss how well things used to flow before. How well written I was. I had a writing habit that's hard to get back into again.

I made a community specifically for my fanfics [community profile] scwritesfic

My fandoms include: sailormoon
supernatural
buffy the vampire slayer
final fantasy viii
final fantasy vii
final fantasy tactics
final fantasy x and x-2
final fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XV
Silent Hill
Resident Evil (Games and Films)
The Vampire Diaries (Books and Television Series)
The Twilight Saga (I'm Pro Jacob/Bella)
Mr. Robot
Until Dawn
J-Squared (J2)
Lisa Frankenstein(2025)
Riverdale
X-Men (Film Franchise)
Naruto
Fatal Frame (Likely Rei and Kei fanfics. also the twins, Miu and Mayu)
Stephen King Universe (Likely IT and a few others)

And that's it. I'm not very pop cultured, because I don't know anything recently besides Lisa Frankenstein. If you're interested in following my community, then please do so. I will also be taking requests in the near future. <3

I'll update around 1 or 2 in the morning with writing I've gotten done today.

There’s something quietly thrilling about reading a book for the first time. The promise of it! The mystery! The potential for a new favorite, or a story that gently rearranges something in your heart. This little list is full of books I’ve never read—some well-loved by others, some quietly intriguing, all of them patiently waiting their turn.

Books I Want to Read for the First Time

  • Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari – Sweeping, smart, and just the right amount of “what is the meaning of human existence anyway?”

  • Beach Read by Emily Henry – Sharp, swoony, and bookish. I’ve heard it’s romcom gold with emotional depth.

  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – A cultural touchstone I somehow missed. Time to meet Katniss and cry about it.

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune – Whimsy, queer joy, and found family. Basically tailor-made for me.

  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid – Old Hollywood, scandal, sapphic love—yes yes yes.

  • Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman – Quiet, sad, and hopeful. I want to give Eleanor a cup of tea and a hug already.

  • Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree – Cosy fantasy comfort food. An orc opens a coffee shop and heals? My serotonin thanks you.

  • A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers – Philosophical sci-fi with gentle worldbuilding. Like a deep breath in book form.

  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – Slow-burn magic and ethereal beauty? I want to vanish into this book like a puff of circus smoke.

  • Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier – Brooding mansion, ghost of a glamorous first wife, and creeping dread? I’m intrigued and slightly nervous.

What’s a book you’ve never read but always meant to? Or one that you were late to but ended up loving? Let’s share our literary blind spots 💛

JFC what is it about Greeks?

A shocking number of people will blithely tell us all about the book they read, in English, on an English-language subreddit, and never tell us that they didn't read it in English. I can only catch so many of them - if they don't say "English isn't my first language" or make any obvious foreign language errors then I'll never know. (Some of them say "I read this in my own language" and then don't tell us what that language was.)

Most of these people, if prompted, will tell you what language they read it in. Three times now, I've had to ask twice because they refused to answer the question in a useful way, and every time that person has been Greek.

I thought it was a little funny the second time, but three times is the start of a worrying pattern, especially as it's not at all the most popular not-English language posted there. Maybe there's something going badly wrong with their school system?

(And, sidenote, even if you're certain it was translated from English you still ought to tell us the language it was written in. At least in theory this can help us weed out false positives, although I may be expecting too much of fellow commenters to that subreddit.)

I mostly post about: My journal is very new, i think I decided to make it because I was feeling a bit low and just wanted to write about my feelings and interests and hopefully find like-minded people. I'm also trying to make my web experience a more pleasant one, so I like looking at journals and personal websites. Indie web, small web, that kind of thing I yearn for so I might share things I find! But so far, I like to yap about my daily life and my practice in fighting games. I just started a fight log so I can hopefully more clearly see my progress! I will probably generally just talk about other things like anime, video games and maybe I'll post art or photos taken on my digicam. Also I'm queer and figuring things out still lmao

My hobbies are: Currently I'm focused in on fighting games (granblue rising, but I'm also a street fighter and guilty gear enjoyer), working on my art, vtubing, crochet and the smallest smattering of baby guitar when I can find time after all that. Other interests that can come back into my rotation is language study (Japanese and Spanish), miniature painting, nail art, weightlifting, snorkeling (I dream of scuba/free diving tho!)

My fandoms are:I'm not deep in any fandom at the moment but I enjoy content from sailor moon, granblue, guilty gear, general DnD stuff, hololive, vshojo and arcane. I'm also a huge Lady Gaga fan. And a lover of My Chemical Romance.

I'm looking to meet people who: I think are cool! I enjoy reading other people's day-to-day life and their passions, might get me excited about something new , too! If we hype over similar things that's a tasty cherry on top ;9

My posting schedule tends to be: aiming for at least a few times a week.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: if you don't support LGBTQ+, if you excuse any wars, if you support generative AI, you know if you lean in those kinds of directions - please don't talk to me.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm sorry if my post was too long! And I might be using this as a form of therapy (cuz therapy is expensive) so if I do post something that's a bit heavier, I'll learn how to put it behind a cut and maybe make it friends only. But I think I'll try and keep cheery here! I'm still learning how to use this site

My Favourite Greek Myth Retellings

Jun. 6th, 2025 11:49 pm

[personal profile] booksbardsandbaselines
Lately I’ve been thinking about how ancient myths are like really old houses: a little crumbling in places, haunted by problematic ghosts, but still full of mystery, beauty, and stories waiting to be told again (ideally with more emotional maturity and less casual divine punishment).

I love Greek mythology, but I really love when modern writers take those stories, dust them off, and give them new life—especially when they do it with lyrical prose, deep empathy, and a healthy suspicion of male heroes.

So here are some of my absolute favourite Greek myth retellings—and why I keep coming back to them like Odysseus to Ithaca (minus the decade-long detour and monster troubles, ideally).

🌿 Circe by Madeline Miller

Circe gets to be more than a witch who turns men into pigs (although… respect). Miller writes her with such grace and fury and introspection—she’s a goddess, yes, but also a woman searching for her place in a world that fears her power. Also, there's a very good lion.

⚔️ The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Look, if you’ve cried over this one, we’re in a support group together. Miller gives Achilles and Patroclus the tender, epic love story they deserve—and it absolutely ruins you in the best, most cathartic way.

🏺 A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes

Women of the Trojan War, assemble! This is like an ancient ensemble drama where everyone finally gets to tell their side. From Cassandra to Penelope to the goddesses themselves, Haynes reminds us that war stories are never just about warriors.

🧵 Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

A dreamy, lyrical dive into the Minotaur myth and its aftermath. Ariadne and her sister Phaedra get to shine (and suffer and rage and hope). Also: Theseus? Still the worst.

🔥 Elektra by Jennifer Saint

Ah yes, the House of Atreus: the original messy reality show. This one zooms in on Clytemnestra, Elektra, and Cassandra, and the cycle of revenge and trauma they’re tangled in. Lots of drama, no easy answers.

🏹 Atalanta by Jennifer Saint

We love a heroine who outruns the boys and keeps her bow steady. This one leans more into the adventure side, following Atalanta with the Argonauts. It’s fun, fierce, and makes room for her to be more than a sidekick.

🧠 Pandora’s Jar by Natalie Haynes

Not a retelling, but a sharp, funny, deeply satisfying feminist look at how mythology (and later writers) twisted women’s stories. Pandora, Medusa, Helen, and others get their dignity back—or at least, their complexity.

If you’ve read any of these, come yell about them with me. If you haven’t—consider this your official invitation to dive in. Just maybe don’t accept gifts from the gods or make eye contact with a gorgon.

Which myth retellings do you love? Which ones do you want to read? I’m always ready to add to the TBR pile (it’s basically a ziggurat at this point).

Name: Karmen

Age: 30s

I mostly post about: personal growth, trauma unpacking, character analysis, neurodivergence, identity, memory, and the messiness of being human. Sometimes it’s raw introspection. Sometimes it’s writing projects. Sometimes it’s emotional archaeology. Expect depth, questions, and occasional chaos.

My hobbies are: Writing, reading, exploring psychological patterns, long drives with curated playlists, casually reverse-engineering tech, helping others make sense of complex systems, data analysis, and overanalyzing fictional characters as a form of therapy.

My fandoms are: Buffy, Doctor Who, Veronica Mars, iZombie, Epic: The Musical, Star Trek, The Martian/Project Hail Mary universe, and anything weird, genre-bending, or emotionally resonant. I also have a soft spot for nostalgic emo vibes and anything that blends humor with existential dread.

I'm looking to meet people who: Think deeply, love honestly, write messily, and aren’t afraid of intensity. Neurodivergent folks, artists, writers, and anyone else who thrives in the liminal spaces between structure and chaos - let’s connect.

My posting schedule tends to be: sporadic but meaningful. If I post, it’s because I have something to say, not because an algorithm demands it.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Bigotry of any kind or cruelty masked as honesty. If you can’t be kind (or at least curious), I’m not your people.

Before adding me, you should know: I’m someone who craves depth over small talk. I’m working on showing up without needing to perform. I write honestly, even when it’s messy. I hold space for contradiction, growth, and grief. If you’re here for realness, reflection, and weird little moments of connection, welcome.

You Had Me At…

You had me at “We were both young when I first saw you.”
I mean… come on. A single sentence and I was swept into a glittery school dance I’d never attended, heart pounding for a boy I’d never met. I didn’t even like country music at the time—but Taylor made it feel like a fairy tale written in the margins just for me.
That was the day I realized that music could tell stories, that four minutes could hold a novel’s worth of longing. “Love Story” wasn’t just a song—it was a soft opening of the door to something I’ve never stopped running toward. (Also, shoutout to 2008 me and that clunky little MP3 player I thought was the height of sophistication.)

You had me at “It is a truth universally acknowledged…”
The sheer elegance. The boldness. The wink. Jane Austen doesn’t ask for your attention—she simply begins. And the line is so good, you surrender immediately. That’s when I started noticing the power of first sentences. The confidence. The voice.
“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”
“Call me Ishmael.”
“I write this sitting in the kitchen sink.”
These aren’t just openings—they’re handshakes, dare-you-to-read-ons, love letters to curiosity. A good first line doesn't just pull you in. It invites you to stay.

You had me at the library.
Technically, you had me at the returns desk. You, with that slightly crooked smile, that perfect eyeliner, and a stack of overdue philosophy books like it was a personality trait. I think I said something wildly flirtatious like, “You’ve got a lot of fines.” (Smooth, right?) And you, without missing a beat, said, “I’m worth it.”
Reader, I married her.
We were both pretending to be casual, but let’s be real—we were orbiting. Me shelving books I’d already read just to loiter nearby. You checking out yet another existential tome with a grin that said, what if I’m the plot twist?
I still remember dropping a stack of poetry books and muttering, “Well, that’s a metaphor,” and your laugh? Immediate main-character energy.
We’ve been writing our story ever since—side by side, spine to spine, chapter by chapter. And it all started with a late return and a perfectly timed quip.

You had me at love on a hard court.
The thwack of racket against ball, the squeak of sneakers on sun-warmed clay, the impossible beauty of a down-the-line winner hit on the run. Tennis is ballet in motion, chess in real time, and pure emotional theater.
You had me at Sabalenka’s fierce roar, at Alcaraz’s sunshine grin, at Sinner’s elegant calm. At the hush before a serve, the sudden intake of breath in a tie-break, the final ace that seals a miracle comeback.
Tennis isn’t just a sport—it’s a language of effort and instinct, of heartbreak and joy. And somewhere in the middle of a third-set rally that lasts twelve shots, something inside you says: this is love.

So yes—you had me at…
At every lyric that knew my heart before I did.
At every sentence that opened the door to a new world.
At every borrowed book, every shared glance over the top of a hardcover.
At every match point, every midnight rewatch, every athlete who made me feel something.

"You had me at hello" is cute.
But honestly?
You had me at yellow. ☀️
